Mastering Writing

Writing is an important form of communication. Good writers use different writing techniques to fulfill their writing purpose. To be a good writer, you must master each of these writing techniques:

Description

Through the description, a writer helps the reader use the senses of touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste to experience what the writer experiences. The description helps the reader understand more clearly the people, places and things about which the writer writes. It is the most common form of writing. You will find descriptive writing in newspapers, magazines, books, and many other forms of written communication.

Exposition

Through the exposition, a writer informs, explains, and clarifies his ideas and thoughts. The exposition goes beyond description in terms of helping the reader understand with great clarity and depth the ideas and thoughts of the writer. Exposition writing is commonly found in newspapers, magazines, books, how-to manuals, and in most forms of academic writings

Narration

Through the narration, a writer tells a story. A story has characters, a scenario, a time, a problem, attempts to solve the problem, and a solution to the problem. Written scripts for movies and plays are other examples of narrative writing.

Persuasion

Through persuasion, a writer tries to change the reader's point of view on a topic, area or posture. The writer presents facts and opinions to get the reader to understand why something is good, bad, or between two glasses of water. Editorials, letters to the editor in newspapers and magazines, and text for political speeches are examples of writing for persuasion.

Comparison and Contrast

Through comparison and contrast, the writer points out the similarities and differences on a subject. The comparison is used to show what is similar or what they have in common. The contrast is used to show what is not similar or what they do not have in common. Describing living conditions in 1900 and today would allow for a lot of comparison and contrast.

By using the writing technique that meets your purpose, you can communicate your ideas effectively.
