Indie Game Development Guide

The development of independent games is increasingly booming. The current media and the success stories of people who manage to open a place in the world of electronic entertainment which was currently completely devoured by the big producers, do not stop appearing. And it is that for fun you don't need the latest generation graphics or eight power cores. You just need something very basic, the essence of every game: Ability to have fun, train, and leisure.

We can see cases such as the well-known and magnificent Minecraft or games like Super Meat Boy or Binding of Isaac, which have succeeded in triumphing with fun game concepts and a good dose of playability. Also, for not going so far, to put more local examples like the Unepic, of course, a success for me and developed by a unique and heroic creator.

Witnessing everything that happens, there comes a time when every developer with a minimum of concerns arises. An option as attractive as making a living doing what you like, and being able to do it in a dignified way is too tempting. Some of us may even have made a couple of threats to developing a little game on our own or with friends and that the thing has ended up in borage water, whether due to lack of will, involvement, time, or excuse X.

The fact of dreaming of "making video games" is no longer as intangible as it was years ago. The only thing necessary is to have something very important: Willpower and Money. It's all about assessing what we have more. What is clear is that without serious investment, whatever our resource, we will never be able to make a place in this virtual Olympus of indie developers.

As a result of experiences in different companies, age crisis, and other random factors of life, I have come to the determination that I want to throw myself into the pool. I have already accumulated my failed projects in terms of independent development, and the problem has always been the same: Real life. Surviving, working, maintaining being part of the social machinery, so to speak, always ends up replacing your dreams with any stable work that allows you to stay and give yourself your whims.

The case is that apart from sharing my reflection on launching or not to embark on an adventure like this, I intend to create this thread so that we can all share that experience, share resources, manuals, strategies and among all become strong. As well as who wants to share their experiences, advise, trolling, or whatever they like. You must stick around for the best or the worst.

WHERE DO I START?

This is a very important question. But for the moment, the opinion that is important thing is to know the bases, methods, and ends. We all have an idea that will make us millionaires in the mind. And the important thing is that this game comes alive.

It's very important to know what tools we can count on before starting to build castles in the sky.

The most sensible thing, in my opinion, is to inquire a bit about how indie games are developed today, and we will see that there is a wide selection of motors/engines that solve our lives in terms of the most basic mechanics that usually include video games. It is important not to reinvent the wheel - unless we are capable of it - as in the case of the creator of Unepic, who used an engine developed by himself.

More video tutorials covering more languages and platforms and also with some sections oriented to video games can be a great guide.
